What shapes is your money?

Pick everything that applies; most people are more than one. This decides which tasks we put in front of you, so a producer isn't handed a songwriter's to-do list. It never changes a number: your money comes from your statements and agreements, never from this answer.

I'm an artist

You perform on recordings, or own them. This is the master side: streaming, your distributor, SoundExchange.

I produce for other artists

You make records for other artists. However you're paid: a flat fee, points through the label, a share of the artist's SoundExchange money directed to you, or a cut from the artist directly.

I write songs

You wrote or co-wrote songs. This is the publishing side: your PRO, The MLC, mechanicals.

I'm signed, or my deal pays back an advance

Also check this if an advance or recording costs are being paid back before money reaches you. Checking this adds an "upload your label statement" step to your checklist; once a statement we can read is on file, your account balance and what's payable light up.

Your deal shape

For songwriters

This tightens every publishing-side estimate and gets the collector right, whether your mechanical royalties are paid to you directly, or through a publishing administrator who takes a cut.

Self-administered

You collect your own publishing. The MLC pays you directly, no administrator cut.

I have a publishing deal

Someone else collects part or all of your publishing. Pick which kind below - it sets how much of each collection reaches you.

Your foreign plays

For recording artists

SoundExchange collects for you inside the United States. Money for your plays abroad reaches you only if an International Mandate is on file with them. We cannot look that up - SoundExchange does not publish it and we do not search their site - so this is one we have to ask you.

Yes, one is on file

You have signed SoundExchange's International Mandate, so they collect your foreign performance royalties on your behalf.

No, I do not have one

Your plays outside the US are not being collected. Filing one is a form.

I am not sure yet

We will keep asking rather than assume either way. Nothing is recorded about your mandate until you know.

Your answer here is recorded, but it doesn't change any of your numbers. It decides which fact we can state about your registration - never a dollar. SoundExchange holds royalties it cannot pay for three years from release before they are distributed to others.

One email a day at most, and only when there is actually something new - a finding we turned up, a date coming up, or something that came of an action you took. Never a running commentary, and never a dollar figure: those live here, behind your login, where they carry their source and their date.

StreamRev staff can sometimes look at your account: to file a claim for you, or to work out why something looks wrong. When that happens through a path that keeps a record, it is listed here. Paths that keep no record are named too, so this page is never a shorter answer than the truth.
